1881

 

 Saturday, January 1, 1881

It was clear and cool all day. I was at home cutting wood and cleaning stables in the forenoon then took W.F.’s Flutina up to Franklin got it fixed, also got a coverlet from Mother. W.F. went to St. Thomas. J.C. went with Mr. Herbert to the Hill to lecture.



Sunday, January 2, 1881

The weather was clear and cool. Sarah, Jacob C. and I were up at the Hill in the sleigh. The Rev. Herbert preached this evening. J.C. went up to the New Franklin S[chool] House at singing. Sarah has a very sore back can’t lay down.



Monday, January 3, 1881

The weather was clear and pleasant all day. I took J.F. Zumbro up to Greencastle and brought him and his trunk along back. The sleighing is very good then in the evening got the jumper down. J.C. took it up to Franklin. W. Frieze is to take John to Waynesboro in it.
 


Tuesday, January 4, 1881

The weather was cloudy and snowy all day. I was about home. Sarah is better. I went down to H. Sniders for some money but was disappointed then came home and put pickle on the meat, done the feeding and sat in the room and read in the book that I borrowed from Aunt Barbara Grove.
 


Wednesday, January 5, 1881

The weather was somewhat cloudy all day. This morning I hitched in the sleigh and went to Franklin then J.C. took W.F. over to his school then I hitched in the jumper and hacked a barrel of water then made 8 brooms for H. Metz and 2 for F. Cook and sorted some others.



Thursday, January 6, 1881

The weather was somewhat cloudy all day. Sarah and I were in town in the sleigh. I got a store of wire then went up to the shop, fixed a key,
 


Saturday, January 8, 1881

The weather was clear and pleasant all day. I hitched in the sleigh, went to Franklin, got Mother in and took her to Chambersburg to Aunt Hannah Bitner’s then in the evening took her home and bought the jumper home to go to mill on Monday and for coal.



Thursday, January 6, 1881

The weather was somewhat cloudy all day. Sarah and I were in town in the sleigh. I got a store of wire then went up to the shop, fixed a key, then went over for W.F. Brought Mrs.Fast’s broom corn along to the shop. I also got J.C. a pencil, tablet, and myself a book for brooms.



Friday, January 7, 1881

The weather was clear and pleasant all day. J.C. took W.F. over to his school then J.S. Zumbro went to mill. I was in the shop, made 19 brooms for Sam’l Small, 9 for Jer. Wildeson and 1 for myself, sold it to G.S.Coover for a shop broom, Was at the Lyceum, it was the best for the winter.

 

Saturday, January 8, 1881

The weather was clear and pleasant all day. I hitched in the sleigh, went  to Franklin, got Mother in and took her to Chambersburg to Aunt Hannah Bitners, then in the evening took her home and brought the jumper home to go to mill on Monday and for coal.

 

Sunday, January 9, 1881

The weather was cloudy, with a little snow and rain by spells. I was at home all day in the evening. I had to go for Dr. Grove for Sarah, her back pains her so. He left a lot of powders for her to take every 3 hours and said he could come down in the morning to cup her.

 

Monday, January 10, 1881

The weather was somewhat cloudy and warm all day. I was about home in the forenoon, then took 6 1/2 bushels of wheat to the mill, then went to town, got some coal and [broom] handles. Sal Seger, D. Senger, D.G. Hoover, J.T. Pfoutz and J. Deardorf
