THE LINDA CARLTON SERIES

Titles

First published by A.L. Burt; at least the three first volumes were reprinted by Saalfield. Linda Carlton is the only daughter of a wealthy adventurer father who is absent from her life for long stretches of time. Raised by her snobbish aunt, Linda is given an airplane by her father and a number of rather unbelievable adventures ensue which are likely to put the timid soul off aviation forever (let's just say that machine malfunctions are extremely likely to occur when Linda is onboard...)

In an overused plot twist, Linda is frequently the only means available for getting sick people to the single surgeon skilled enough to treat them (naturally, this surgeon is always located hundreds of miles away and there are no other pilots available or willing to fly through the dark/storm/woods.) The doctors in Linda's own region are strangely unskilled:  in book 2, a child swallows a pin, and the local physician can do nothing but predict that the child will surely die within 8 hours (of course, there *is* one doctor skilled enough to save her, but he's inconveniently located in Philadelphia, 1000 miles away. Gosh, how will they ever get that mortally-ill child to the doctor in time?)
