Hailing from Greensboro, Alabama, Hobson joined the Navy after college and served in the Spanish-American War; the Congressional Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 1933 for his part in the sinking of the Merrimac in 1898. He served in congress as one of Alabama's Representatives for four terms. After losing the nomination in 1916, Hobson founded/served on a number of groups devoted to alcohol/narcotics problems. He wrote a number of books on alcohol and naval matters, in addition to the 2-book "Buck Jones" series.
