I'm not a big Howard Garis fan -- I think he's the hackest of hack writers. Mind, I'm not saying I could do any better if I were forced to churn out prose at Garis' rate, but I've never been able to warm up to any of his series and I can smell a book he's ghostwritten a mile off. His dialogue is exasperatingly awkward, his plot twists are ridiculous, and he never met a series book cliche that he didn't like well enough to use twenty or thirty times. The "Dick Hamilton" series is prime Garis, as the filthy rich protagonist -- needless to say, he is also handsome, manly, and athletic -- wins out at anything he essays to try his hand at. Larry Dexter, hero of Garis's contemporaneous "Young Reporter" series, makes guest appearances in several of the books.
