THE FIGHTERS FOR FREEDOM SERIES

Adventure stories taking place against a backdrop of World War II. "Sally Scott" is the only one I have actually read so far. I liked it -- the heroine was courageous and resourceful without being unrealistically virtuous, the story and setting themselves were interesting, and the book was free of the kind of jingoistic racism about "Japs" and "Dagos" unfortunately found in so many war-based series books. In looking for publishing information in WorldCat, I found it interesting that Snell wrote his Master's thesis at the University of Chicago, during the World War I period, on the topic of "The Moral Significance of Children's Reading."

I'm not sure if the "Punch Davis" volume is part of this series.

  1. SALLY SCOTT OF THE WAVES -- By Roy J. Snell. Illustrated by Hedwig Jo Meixner. 1943, Whitman.

Sally Scott carries a secret when she goes through WAVES training -- a new kind of radio, the invention of an elderly man from her hometown. Against regulations, she takes the radio with her when she is posted on an aircraft carrier. Turns out, the radio picks up "secret frequencies", and allows Sally to detect the movements of enemy submarines. Sally 'fesses up to her commanding officers about the radio, and all is forgiven as Sally uses it to save the ship convoy, time after time. Sally's love interest, a pilot (whose Spartan mother, rather improbably, serves as a nurse on her son's aircraft carrier) is lost at sea during a mission and the convoy cannot turn back to search for him... will he still be alive on the return trip?
