THE GRACE HARLOWE SERIES

There are actually four series
featuring Grace Harlowe. The first, the "High School Girls" series
was published by Altemus and reprinted by Goldsmith and Donohue. The second,
the "College Girls" series, was published by Altemus and reprinted
by Donohue. The "Overseas" series was published by Altemus, and
the fourth, the "Overland Riders" series was published by Altemus
and reprinted by Saalfield. I've read on other websites that the books were written by Josephine Chase.
The "High School Girls" series follows the high school career of courageous, athletic Grace Harlowe and her friends -- kind-hearted, quick-tempered Nora, loyal Jessica, and intelligent Anne Pierson, who is continually harassed by her ne'r-do-well father; along with four boys, the group comprises the "Eight Originals". Later, other girls and boys are added to the group: two "enemy" girls who repent and become Grace's friends, a young orphan who is taken up by the group, etc. The College series follows Grace, Anne, and Miriam as they go off to Overton College; after college, Grace stays at Overton, getting a job managing a boarding house for needy girls. Several new characters are introduced -- Emma Dean, J. Elfreda Briggs, etc. -- who continue throughout the later series. In a typical High School or College volume, a trouble-making girl who is jealous of Grace is eventually "converted" and becomes her friend, or a plucky orphan girl is restored to her long lost parents. The Overseas books follow Grace's adventures as an ambulance driver in WW I; I haven't read any of these, so I can't comment on them. The Overland Riders books are gunslinging Westerns -- Grace and her friends Nora and Hippy (now married), J. Elfreda (now a lawyer) and Emma (inexplicably, she has become a mystic cult-of-the-month devotee), joined occasionally by Grace's now-husband Tom Gray and others -- roam around with pistols and lassos, battling rustlers, border thieves, claim-jumpers, and moonshiners. This series seems much more formulaic and less well-written than the other three. In a unique bit of cross-series marketing on Altemus' part, Grace and Co. make a guest appearance in at least one of the Meadow-brook Girls books, another Altemus series. Supposedly, Hippy Wingate, who later marries Grace's friend Nora, is the cousin of Meadow-brook girl Tommy Thompson. Additionally, one of the Pony Rider Boys turns out to be another of Hippy's cousins, and he is featured as a main character in several of the Overland Riders books. Madge Morton pops up in one of the College series, as well. |
