THE JOYCE PAYTON SERIES
By Dorothy WhitehillNotes
Titles
Joyce "Joy" Payton is separated from her family throughout her childhood, then reunited with them as she approaches adolescence, a plot device that will be familiar to readers of Whitehill's "Twins" series (Joy is raised by servants until she is six, and then runs away and joins a Gypsy band until she is ten or eleven.) Like the Janet and Phyllis Page, Joy and her "new sister" Pam are sturdy, independent girls who eventually attend a girls' boarding school, the scene of the action of several of the series' books. This series was originally published by Barse, reprinted by Grosset and Dunlap, and later reprinted by Whitman (first 4 volumes only.)
