"Did you remember to cable Uncle Charlie?" Maxwell Johnston demanded before her Uncle Nat had time to hang up his hat and coat.

"Why yes, my dear," the absent-minded professor answered mildly, "I think I managed to do all that remained undone."

As far back as she could remember, Maxie had lived on Chicago Boulevard in Detroit, in the big roomy house owned by Professor Nathaniel Johnston. She had never been to school, her uncle preferring to teach her himself in the hours he managed to tear himself away from his musty old volumes, and geological specimens.

Maxie had only one other relative, her mother's brother, Charles, who lived in the West Indies. He was manager of the West Indian branch of a large oil company with headquarters in Trinidad. When he heard that Professor Johnston had been asked by the Geological Society to go to Tibet and examine new specimens of rock formation just unearthed, he had written at once asking that Maxie be allowed to stay with him while her other uncle was away.

"Uncle Nat," as Maxie called the professor, although very old-fashioned in some things, was a great believer in modern methods of transportation. He had heard that Captain Graves the famous aviator was soon to take his big tri-motor to refuel at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. Having known the famous airman for some time, Professor Johnston after many days of anxious thought went to see Captain Graves, and after explaining the situation to him managed to persuade the captain to take Maxie as a passenger so that he would hear of her safe arrival before he left.
