From Second Year Nurse:

"It isn't going to be easy for you, Miss Kimball."

The words were spoken without warmth, but without disapproval. Nancy Kimball looked steadily at the speaker.

"I know that, Miss Bruce."

"Our standards here at City Hospital are very high. You are coming to us in the middle of your second year of nursing -- a difficult time." She paused, as if expecting Nancy to make some comment.

"Yes, Miss Bruce. They told us that at home, at Mercy Hospital. They talked about something called 'second year slump -- told us how nurses tended to let down in their second year, once they had earned their caps and seemed safely launhed on a nursing career."

Miss Brucce nodded. Her sharp blue eyes peered down her long nose at the records of Nancy's grades, then Miss Bruce looked back at Nancy.

"I see by these papers that you had more C's than B's last year at Mercy."

"Yes, Miss Bruce."

"I think that you will have to work harder if you hope to catch up here." She paused, fixing Nancy with those bright blue eyes. "Have you ever been away from home before?"
