Road Trip 2006We just got back from a 2400 mile road trip one way across half the USA. Some may think we are crazy for taking such a trip with a one year old and an almost two and a half year old, but they actually did very well. The following is the route we took over seven days: We took Amtrak from Kansas City, MO to Fullerton, CA outside of Los Angeles. It was a 36 hour trip, bedroom and meals included. The route passed through MO, KS, CO, NM, AZ, and CA. After a couple days checking out the beaches and other sites in the Los Angeles area, we headed up California to the Sequoia National Park then on to Sacramento. From there we hit Lake Tahoe, Salt Lake City, Cheyenne, North Platte, and finally back to Kansas City.We drove close to 12 hours a day only stopping to eat a couple times each day and sometimes for a potty break. I doubt we try it again very soon. I would not suggest the drive across Nevada to anyone, at least not during the summer. It is very long, hot, and brown. The Pacific coast is beautiful though. We recommend Laguna Beach for those searching for a clean, less crowded beach to take your family to in the Los Angeles area. Amtrak is definitely the way to travel long distances. If going to Los Angeles: 1.Do not travel or try to sightsee in the evening. 2.If you want a cleaner beach without the oil residue, go south or north of the immediate Los Angeles area. 3.Stay away from Venice Beach if you do not want to see tattoo parlors, people begging for marijuana money, palm readers, and half naked people.
